Cataract Surgery

Modern Cataract Surgery is an elegant surgical procedure performed to remove a cloudy natural lens in the eye, and replacing the lens with an Intra-ocular Lens (IOL) Implant.

As the lens contributes to the refractive power of the eye, an IOL of variable power can be used to correct myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness), astigmatism and presbyopia (the need for reading glasses).

Cataract surgery has evolved from large incision surgery in the 1950s to small incision surgery using foldable lens implants. In recent years, the femtosecond laser has been introduced to perform parts of the small incision surgery, which represents a promising sea change in this exciting field.
